the University of California, Los Angeles; Master of Science Degree in
School Psychology from California State University, Los Angeles;
attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University
and earned
a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the Claremont Graduate
University; professional: served as an elementary school teacher, acting
principal, assistant superintendent of child welfare and attendance, and
school psychologist; served on the faculty at both California State
University, Los Angeles, and Long Beach; Health Occupations Specialist,
California Department of Education; awards: named Legislator of the Year
by numerous California universities, associations, and organizations;
public service: Los Angeles Unified School District Board Member; served
in the California State Senate for 20 years; served as U.S. Ambassador
to Micronesia, 1999-2001; committees: Government Reform; International
Relations; subcommittees: Africa, Global Human Rights and International
Operations; Asia and the Pacific; Criminal Justice, Drug Policy, and
Human Resources; ranking member, Energy and Resources; elected to the
